As you know, I’m a huge fan of thrifting and purchasing items that are already out in the world and ready for a new home. However, there seems to be the misconception that thrifting means ugly, smelly sweaters or outdated jeans. And, sure, there’s definitely some of that but with a little searching (ESPECIALLY ONLINE), there are some amazing finds on sites like Poshmark, ThredUp, and eBay. If you’re new to the thrifting game and don’t have the time or energy to spend hours weeding through your local thrift shop, go the online route! Yes — the items will be more expensive than finding it at a local store but you’ll also be able to find exactly what you’re looking for at a fraction of the time.
Online Thrifting Tips
- Know exactly what you’re searching for. Is it a plaid dress from Zara? A collector tee from J. Crew? Or an oversized American Eagle sweater? Search for that. Don’t get distracted.
- Don’t know what exactly you’re looking for? Get inspiration from Pinterest, fashion bloggers, and store websites. I saw the two Zara dresses below on Pinterest, thought they were cute, and snagged both on Poshmark for a fraction of the cost.
- Not finding what you’re looking for? First, try different searches. The white Zara dress below could be under it’s official name (“Zara parrot dress”) or “embroidered Zara dress” or “floral embroidered dress” — search around. Still can’t find it? Wait it out. I was looking for a particular jacket from J. Crew and after a month of periodic searching — the exact one popped up on Poshmark.
- Save money by using coupon codes on ThredUp and by sending fair(!) offers on Poshmark (most sellers are motivated and will gladly accept an offer that shaves a few bucks off).
